|  Katherine Casey began her teaching career at PS 116 in New York City's acclaimed District 2 after graduating with a BA from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. At PS 116 Katherine became a math teacher leader under the leadership of Lucy West, learned to teach reading and writing through involvement with staff developers from Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and engaged in curriculum mapping with Heidi Hayes Jacobs.
While a classroom teacher, Katherine began consulting in the Kansas City Missouri Public School District through the Kauffman Foundation and led summer institutes for TERC's mathematics curriculum, Investigations in Data, Number and Space. The Institute for Learning at the University of Pittsburgh videotaped her teaching for inclusion in its CD-ROM about the Principles of Learning. District 2 awarded Katherine a fellowship to the Aspiring Leaders SAS Program at Baruch College where she earned her administration and supervision license.
Katherine moved to San Diego to become a consultant in the Literacy Department in San Diego Unified and an Instructor in the Educational Leadership Development Academy at the University of San Diego. She led workshops for teachers, peer coach staff developers, principals, and instructional leaders on Balanced Literacy approaches, standards-based planning, text analysis, monitoring student learning, supporting English Language Learners, and curriculum mapping. Katherine mentored aspiring principals and vice principals in the ELDA program and taught courses on designing effective adult learning.
Currently Katherine works with the Center For Educational Leadership at the University of Washington in its partnerships with districts in Washington and California and leads workshops for instructional coaches. She continues to work with charter schools and a high school in San Diego Unified. Katherine also works with the educators across the nation and international coaches she meets through her book, Literacy Coaching: The Essentials.
